Some Examples of Embedded Data Analysis
There are many ways to use embedded data analysis in online curriculum materials.
Mathematics
- Behaviors of the Mean and Median
Experiment with dragging points in a dot plot to see what happens to the mean and median when the data changes.
- Patterns in the Numbers Chart
A grid of numbers gets colored according to hour choice of how many in a row and what number property to use.
- Fitting Lines to Data
There are two exercises here, the first showing a possible relationship between latitude and temperature for eight cities, and the second giving you a chance to look for relationships in data for 1249 baseball players. (These two exercises draw from Algebra I, section 4-3.)
- Modeling a Geometric Sequence with a Function
Play around with the family of geometric sequences that represent a tournament. Come up with a function that models the relationship between teams left and round number. (This is based on a Real World Example in section 7-7 of the Algebra 1 CCSS eBook.)
- Planetary Function
Find the quantitative relationship between the distance of a planet from the sun and the time it takes to go around the sun.
Biology
- Natural Selection
Manipulate sliders to simulate three kinds of selection pressure. (This is from Glencoe Biology 2012 eTeacherEdition, page 434, shown at right.)
- Mammals
Improve your graph reading skills and learn some interesting things about mammals.
Chemistry
- Elements
Investigate relationships between properties of elements paying special attention to those that exhibit periodicity.
Physical Science
- Heating and Cooling
Given the data from heating a pan of water to boiling and then allowing it to cool, describe what took place quantitatively.
History
- Presidents
Discover many interesting facts and trends about the nation's presidents.
Economics
- Time Series
Explore a bunch of economic time series both in current dollars and constant dollars.
