Water SCIENCE Monitor Privacy Policy

Water SCIENCE is created and maintained by the Concord Consortium. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, share and protect information in relation to our mobile apps, websites and any software provided in connection with Water SCIENCE (collectively the “Service”) and your options regarding the collection and use of your information. This privacy policy applies to all users and others who visit this website or use the Service.

This policy does not apply to websites or services or practices of companies that we do not own or control, such as third party services that you might access through links or features on the Service. These other services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them before providing them with personal information.

This privacy policy was last updated on May 8, 2015. This privacy policy may change from time to time. If we make any material changes to our policies, we will place a prominent notice on our website or application. If the change materially affects registered users, we will send a notice to you by email, push notification or text.

If you, or your parent/guardian on your behalf, do not wish to be bound by this privacy policy, please exit the Service now and do not access, download or use the Service.

We collect a small amount of data from users of the Service. E-mail addresses and any other personal information collected will never be sold, rented or otherwise disclosed to other organizations unless we believe we are required to do so by law.

Details about the kinds of data we collect and what we do with it are listed below.

Photographs

The Water SCIENCE Monitor app is capable of taking photographs which can be uploaded to a central location on the Web that is publicly accessible. Uploaded photographs and associated data are stored on the iSENSE website. While it is not intended that the app be used to take photographs of people, it is possible to take photographs of people and upload them to a publicly viewable website. Please take this into consideration when using the app.

In addition, location information is saved with photographs taken by the Water SCIENCE Monitor app and stored alongside them in a publicly viewable web page.

Cookies, Web Beacons and Other Tracking Technologies

The Service may use cookies, web beacons or unique device identifiers to collect information about how visitors use and navigate it. These tracking technologies collect information in an anonymous form that does not identify users. We use this information to compile reports for helping us improve the Service.

The Service uses Google Analytics and Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting. Visitors can opt-out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising and customize Google Display Network ads using Google’s Ads Settings.

Internet Data

Your Web browser and Internet connection inherently reveal some information about your computer or device, such as which Web browser you’re using and what operating system it runs. We use such data in aggregate form to better understand the general types of users using the Service so that we may make the Service more useful for them. We also use this data to help us diagnose problems with the Service’s Web servers or websites.

Location Information

Our websites do not use or collect your precise geographic location.

Our Water SCIENCE Monitor app will collect your precise geographic location if you grant it that ability on your device. You will be asked to allow the app to access your location after taking your first photograph. Doing so is not required, but is strongly recommended. Location information will be used for analysis by participants in the Water SCIENCE project.

When uploading data and photographs from the app, your location information will be stored and presented alongside your data and photographs in a publicly viewable website.

Access to Your Information

If you upload information within the Service, you can see the information stored on the iSENSE website. You can also contact us by email to request to see this information.

Security

The Concord Consortium follows generally accepted industry standards and maintains reasonable safeguards to attempt to secure your personally identifiable information against unauthorized access or disclosure. Although we take reasonable care to secure the information you provide to us, we cannot guarantee the security of information transmitted over the Internet or wirelessly from your computer or other devices to our servers. Therefore, while we attempt to protect your information, we do not accept liability for unintentional disclosure of that information.

Publicly viewable data and photographs uploaded via the Water SCIENCE monitor app are not protected. Teachers concerned with being identified from data uploaded by their students are encouraged to have their students enter a pseudonym in the app’s Teacher Name field. Teachers are also encouraged to instruct their students to not to take photographs of themselves and/or other students when using the app.
