Senior Research Scientist – Education Technology

The Concord Consortium is a nonprofit educational technology R&D organization with offices in Concord, MA, and Emeryville, CA, and with an international reputation for innovations in technology that improve teaching and learning. Our educational developments have been widely adopted and have had broad impact throughout education — including our earliest work in probeware, which ignited a whole field, and the nation’s first online high school, which served as a model for many more. We are always looking to increase our talented pool of Senior Research Scientists, and have an ongoing opening for a Senior Research Scientist with a strong science background who has experience as a project director or principal investigator. We are looking for someone with ideas and motivation to make a difference in STEM education, and to initiate grant-supported research and development that expands on our tradition of technology-based innovations in STEM fields. The ideal candidate would be an outstanding, dedicated professional who is extremely knowledgeable in STEM educational research and who is familiar with educational technology, school-based implementation, and research and project management.

The candidate would be flexible and willing to contribute to several projects in different roles such as conducting research on learning, developing curriculum, designing new technology, providing professional development and developing proposals for new work. Proven grant-writing ability is essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who have specialized skills such as educational data mining, innovative online assessment, or visualization and computational modeling.

The candidate will join the research team on one or more current projects that involve innovative technology embedded in rigorous curricula to improve the teaching and learning of science, math and engineering. Knowledge about a range of qualitative and quantitative educational research designs and statistical techniques is required. Over the next few years, the candidate will be expected to create and manage new projects that build on and expand our expertise.

The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in cognitive science or a related research field, preferably with cognitive research experience in the educational application of technology. The equivalent of an undergraduate major in a STEM field is highly desired. Additional desired qualifications include knowledge of K-12 and undergraduate STEM content and standards, expertise in curriculum design, classroom experience, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with many different people with differing academic backgrounds. Preference will be given to a candidate who has been a principal investigator of a successful project funded by the National Science Foundation or other federal agency.


  • Develop proposals for further funding.
  • Design and direct research designs for projects.
  • Direct the statistical analysis of items, student logs, and other learner and teacher artifacts.
  • Generate scholarly publications and reviewed talks.
  • Manage projects and conduct general project work.
  • Travel and present at a range of conferences and convocations.


  • Doctoral degree in cognitive science or a related research field.
  • The equivalent of an undergraduate major in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of the research literature in science education.
  • Experience in designing and administering educational research.
  • Contributions to research in educational technology through peer-reviewed talks and publications.
  • Successful experience writing, receiving and managing federal grant funding.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken form. Contributions to research in educational technology through peer-reviewed talks and publications.
  • Experience in educational technology and its applications and assessment in science, math and engineering.
  • The successful candidate is authorized to work in the U.S. and will be required to work on-site.

The organization particularly seeks candidates with experience in educational applications of visualizations, educational data mining, technology-based performance assessment, technology-based formative assessment, or research on student learning and application of scientific and engineering practices.
