The Effect of Environmental Factors
on the Growth and Survival of Plants

In this simulation you will investigate the effect of environmental factors on the growth and survival of plants. To plan and carry out an investigation, consider the following:

  • Independent variable: amount of sunlight
  • Dependent variable: growth of plant
  • Controlled variables: type of plant (genetic makeup), number of seeds, availability of water, time
  • Inquiry question: What is the effect of the amount of sunlight on plants' growth?

To carry out your experiment:

  • Select the plant with purple, lilac or pink flowers.
  • Plant four plants in each row with a different amount of sunlight.
  • Click the Play button.
  • Observe and record the plants' height.
