Software UI/UX Designer

Ready to extend web applications for K-12 students and teachers to reinvent the way students learn STEM subjects? The Concord Consortium, an educational nonprofit located in Concord, MA, and Emeryville, CA, is seeking a Software UI/UX Designer to create beautiful, highly interactive models and graphic design for innovative science, engineering, and math activities. Working with software developers, educational researchers, and other members of the development team, you will create the interaction patterns and visual design to help learners achieve critical STEM skillsets. This will be the only full-time UI position in the organization, so we’re looking for someone who’s excited to come in and lead the way.

In this position you will:

  • Discuss learning and instructional goals for research projects in software (and occasionally hardware) and design interaction patterns and UI mockups
  • Understand and extend the specifics of visual and gestural expression for quantitative and relational concepts
  • Develop and maintain effective libraries of interaction and display patterns, keeping abreast of current techniques in the field
  • Produce actionable mockups and layout references for software developers
  • Participate in software development meetings
  • Design and conduct usability tests
  • Learn a project’s science, engineering, or math subject matter well enough to work effectively with the project leader
  • Rotate among several projects, switching as needed
  • Suggest new design and process ideas to project leaders and developers

To accomplish this you need experience:

  • Designing educational software design for K-12 learners in classrooms, museums, or other environments
  • Working with and communicating designs to both stakeholders and developers
  • Collaborating and presenting in an agile environment
  • Creating user flows to describe navigation through a website or app
  • Designing web or mobile applications (in addition to web sites), and be ready to show and discuss your portfolio of work
  • Using design software tools (Illustrator, Photoshop, or equivalent)
  • Designing data-rich UIs (dashboards or other)
  • Conducting usability tests and ideation meetings
  • Designing from pedagogical and perceptual principles driving decisions in typography, color, layout, and information design
  • Understanding the strengths and limitations of various browsers and device platforms

You will be even more successful if you have experience with or interest in:

  • Novel techniques for expressing complex concepts such as relative scale or hierarchical relationships
  • Animation or illustration skills
  • Some HTML/CSS
  • Game design
  • Products that need to work on both small and large screens or are responsive
  • AR/VR or 3D environment design
  • Writing front-end JavaScript, especially using React
  • Prototyping tools such as Balsamiq or Invisionapp
  • Creating style guides for developers to follow
  • Coursework in cognitive science, computer-human interaction, education and/or graphic design
