Director of Technology

Are you excited about creating educational technology for STEM learning? The Concord Consortium is looking for a Director of Technology to help bring its work in STEM educational technology to new heights. In this important role, you will manage an experienced software development team working on multiple STEM education projects, oversee IT needs for our bi-coastal organization, and help establish vision and roadmaps for future cutting-edge educational technology innovation. In this position, you will:

Lead our software development team, including:

  • Overseeing a software development team of 10-12 software developers and consultants
  • Understanding the quality of each developer’s work and leading performance reviews
  • Coaching developers in areas for growth and defining professional growth goals
  • Building team culture and overseeing software development process improvement
  • Coordinating with architect to align development process with architectural goals
  • Hiring new developers or development consultants as needed

Manage our organization’s internal IT services, including:

  • Overseeing IT services for 40+ employees with offices in Concord, MA, and Emeryville, CA, in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Managing dedicated IT support personnel and hire additional consultants as needed
  • Setting and administering IT budget, setting IT goals, and planning and executing IT projects
  • Communicating with staff about IT policies and changes, and coordinating with finance and administration staff on support and financial infrastructure need
  • Serve as Data Security Coordinator, implementing and maintaining our Information Security Plan

Lead our organizational technology vision by example, including:

  • Setting technology strategy for internal software development tools and processes
  • Mapping future technology goals for organizational IT needs
  • Identifying important cutting-edge technologies and envisioning their educational potential

For this position, you will need:

  • 10+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years leadership experience in software development
  • Experience managing software teams, including hiring, evaluating, and coaching developers
  • Experience leading Agile development and managing process improvements
  • Experience hiring and managing consultants
  • Experience managing or providing IT support services such as server administration, desktop support, and network infrastructure
  • Strong interest in science, math, and engineering, including the willingness to dive into a new STEM topic and understand it in depth

You will do even better if you have:

  • Experience working on research projects
  • Experience creating systems for data analytics
  • Experience creating highly interactive user interfaces
  • Experience developing in JavaScript, React, or Ruby on Rails
  • Experience configuring and deploying AWS services
  • Experience balancing the needs of multiple project / products with different stakeholders
  • Background in web development, hardware programming, and data collection / analysis
  • A degree in computer science or computer engineering
  • A degree in a science or engineering field
  • A geeky penchant for tinkering and exploring with any new technology
  • Fun and enjoyment in whatever you undertake in life
